This presentation will discuss how the strength and resiliency of masonry construction can help protect a building – and its occupants – from storm damage, return structures to use faster following a disaster and reduce the long-term cost of repairs.

After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

• Identify concrete masonry's inherent sustainable and resilient qualities.
• Discuss the US Resiliency Council's (USRC) three dimensions of safety, damage and recovery, as well as the impacts of resilient construction.
• Review "lessons learned" from design and construction failures during several past hurricanes and tornadoes, including defining the strengths and weaknesses of different wall structures.
• Learn how the use of concrete masonry products can contribute to sustainable, economical and durable building projects.

This one-hour HSW course will explore how to effectively design masonry walls using legacy stone products, such as natural limestone, cast stone and architectural masonry stone, as well as calcium silicate and architectural pre-cast products. Attendees will learn the proper design techniques which focus on the prevention of moisture and crack control issues. Additionally, the discussion will emphasize the planning and designing of sound masonry walls using proper architectural components based on industry guidelines and specifications.

After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

• Understand the history of Indiana Limestone and why it's been the product choice for thousands of years.
• Explain the performance benefits of architectural stone including strength, low moisture characteristics and durability as well as how these qualities effect the building envelope’s ability to protect the inhabited environment.
• Understand the different manufacturing methods of stone masonry products in offering an economical and aesthetically pleasing weather-resistant, and a fire resistant exterior stone cladding for the building envelope.
• Identify proper detailing methods to help mitigate moisture intrusion in a building.

When properly constructed, single-wythe masonry walls offer a myriad of benefits that no other building material can touch from fire to moisture protection, durability to aesthetics, and cost-effective installation This presentation covers how to properly construct a wall using proper design techniques focusing on the prevention of moisture, cracking, and cleaning issues in order to take full advantage of the benefits of masonry construction.

After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

• Understand why and where masonry walls begin to crack.
• Understand updates to energy codes in relation to single-wythe wall design.
• Plan and design a sound single-wythe wall.
• Eliminate unnecessary repairing and cleaning of masonry walls.

This presentation will cover masonry solutions that deliver superior moisture control and an environmentally sound structure. We will cover proper flashing and masonry installation strategies, discuss water repellant admixture advances for both block and mortars, and review the advantages of complete masonry systems to mitigate water penetration and provide backup moisture management.
